Engineering Geology

Physical and mechanical characterization of soils and rocks through field surveys, in-situ tests, and laboratory tests. Geological aspects of the design of surface and underground geotechnical structures. Planning and design of landslide stabilization works.

Most man-made structures are built on the Earth's surface or by means of underground excavations. They interact significantly with the geological environment and multiple geological factors influence the planning, design, construction, and management of such works. On the one hand, it is important to understand the structure and characteristics of the material to build safe and efficient structures. On the other, it is important to understand the geological environment to minimize the potential impact on precious resources and design fully sustainable interventions.

The BiGeA Department possesses all the geological and applied geological expertise needed to define advanced geological models, characterize natural materials, and develop forecasts useful for implementing rational and sustainable interventions.
