Conservation biology

Conservation biology is a scientific discipline that aims to analyze and intervene in the processes that threaten biodiversity. It combines principles of ecology, genetics, and other disciplines to develop strategies aimed at preventing the extinction of species, and protecting and restoring habitats and ecosystems.

Conservation biology is a crucial scientific discipline dedicated to addressing the global crisis of biodiversity loss. It focuses on analyzing and intervening in the various processes that threaten species and ecosystems, such as habitat destruction, climate change, overexploitation, and pollution. This field is inherently multidisciplinary, drawing on knowledge from different subjects, rooted in ecology and genetics but integrating insights from molecular biology, evolutionary biology, sociology, economics and others. This holistic approach allows scientists and practitioners to develop comprehensive strategies for biodiversity conservation. The main research areas at the Department BIGEA include conservation genetics, which studies populations, conservation planning, focusing on the establishment of protected areas, and sustainable management of species ecosystems and resources.
