Physical stratigraphy and paleoecology

High-resolution, multidimensional stratigraphic and paleobiological analysis of facies and sedimentary successions, in both outcrops and sediment cores. Reconstruction of depositional trends and application of sequence stratigraphy principles to environmental studies, engineering, and sustainable resource management.

This research field focuses on developing synergies between sedimentology and paleobiology, with particular emphasis on the three-dimensional depositional architecture and facies analysis of outcropping and cored alluvial, coastal, and marginal-marine successions. The reconstruction of quantitative paleobiological patterns derived from the micro- and macro-fauna, integrated with sedimentological studies, enables a multidimensional interpretation of sedimentary successions within a sequence-stratigraphic framework. The application of the principles of actuopaleontology to both marine and continental successions is critical to sedimentary facies characterization and to the identification of depositional trends, which are essential for high-resolution stratigraphic correlation. This approach is widely applied to natural resources (water, oil, gas, geothermal energy, and minerals), engineering and environmental geology, geoarchaeology, and seismic hazard assessment.
