Laboratory Deep Carbon Lab

Keywords

Deep Carbon cycle; Carbon-bearing rock samples; Correlative petrology; Fluid inclusion extraction and isotopic analysis; Laboratory funded by the European Research Council (ERC)

The Deep Carbon Lab, located in Via Selmi 3, Bologna, Italy, stems from the research activities of the EU-funded ERC CoG “Deep Serpentinization, H2, and high-pressure abiotic CH4” (DeepSeep) (Grant 804546). The laboratory centers on the preparation and analysis of samples of rocks and fluids aimed at understanding the genesis and transformation of deep abiotic hydrocarbons. The access to the laboratory facilities is currently exclusive to the ERC DeepSeep team or to collaborations related to it.

Laboratory equipment

Besides basic instrumentation (centrifuge, micro-balances, an ultrasonic cleaner, a vibrational polisher for EBSD preparation, a universal Owen, a hotplate-stirrer) the Deep Carbon Lab is also equipped with the following facilities:

- Zeiss AxioZoom v.16 motorized macroscope

- Zeiss AxioScope7 motorized petrographic microscope

- Zeiss AxioScope5 petrographic microscope

- Zeiss AxioLab petrographic microscope

- Zeiss EVO 15 SEM equipped with EDS Oxford Ultim Max 100 e EBDS C-Nano detectors, variable pressure

- Optical cathodoluminescence Newtec Cathodyne

- CRDS isotopic analyzer Picarro G2201-I with AutomateFX carbonate acidification module

- Vacuum lines for fluid inclusion extraction

- Microdrill for fluid inclusion extraction
