The research group activity is carried out in the fields of classical Mineralogy, Crystallography, Petrology, Applied Mineralogy, Biomineralogy and Biomaterials, in national and international projects, public and private. The research is also dedicated to the development and application of specific experimental and theoretical methods of investigation.
In particular, the issues here mainly addressed are the ones of classification and characterization of minerals, crystallography that studies minerals from a physico-chemical and atomic structure point of view, the study of igneous and metamorphic processes and their impact on our territory, the characterization of natural and artificial (mortars, dimension stones, ancient and modern ceramics) belonging to the archeological heritage and to the built environment, the classic biomineralogy and study of mineral surfaces, mineral based biomaterials and the study of the interactions between organic / biological matter and mineral surfaces.
The group carries out fundamental and applied research with a multidisciplinary character and combines filed work with mineralogy, petrography and petrology, high-temperature geochemistry and computational modelling.
